Carroll Detention Center History
Carroll County’s Sheriff history distinguishes the 1837 Historic Jail from the operating Detention Center built beside it in 1971 and later expanded. The historic structure now serves administrative functions. It is not the current release location and should not be used as the address for an inmate-release inquiry.
The cited history describes the current center as a 24,000-square-foot site with capacity up to 185. A fiscal year 2027 capital document describes a funded or planned 82,000-square-foot, 300-bed replacement project in Westminster. That project is not an operating jail until an official opening announcement confirms the change.
